We know that choosing an instrument can be a tough decision, for both kids and parents. That's why we provide the opportunity for students try out a different instrument every 2 weeks during our 20-week Music Discovery Program. Students between the ages of 6 to 9 journey through learning Piano, Voice, Hand Percussion, Drums, Ukulele, Guitar, Violin, Clarient, Flute, and Trumpet, under the guidance of our versatile multi-instrumentalist instructors.

Each instrument introduces the young explorers to new techniques, unique tones, fun facts, and exciting games. By the end of the program, your child will have a basic understanding of playing simple tunes or rhythms on each instrument, empowering them to make an informed choice about further study. Weeks 1 & 2: Piano

In the initial two weeks, students are immersed in the world of the piano, an instrument synonymous with music learning and known for its versatility across musical genres. They'll explore the mechanics and understand how pressing keys leads to a beautiful array of sounds. As they delve into the rudiments of melody creation, rhythm comprehension, and basic finger placement, these weeks aim to instill an appreciation for the piano's harmonic richness and inspire an enthusiasm for music.

Weeks 3 & 4: Voice

Weeks 3 and 4 turn the spotlight onto the voice, our most innate instrument. Students will understand how to harness their voices, exploring the fundamental principles of singing, such as pitch control and correct breathing techniques. They'll learn how to shape their vocal tone and volume, and how to utilize these elements to bring out emotions in their singing. By engaging in interactive vocal exercises and simple song practice, the goal is to nurture their vocal abilities and foster confidence in their unique musical identity.

Week 5 & 6: Hand Percussion

The journey of musical exploration continues with hand percussion in Weeks 5 and 6. Students will explore a variety of percussion instruments including tambourines, bongos, claves, maracas, and more – and develop an understanding of the distinct sounds each instrument creates. While coordinating rhythms in a group setting and participating in games that reinforce foundational rhythmic understanding, these weeks are full of fun.

Weeks 6 & 7: Drums

Weeks 7 and 8 bring students into the energetic world of drums, one of the most physically engaging and rhythmically crucial instruments in music. Here, they'll become familiar with the components of a drum set – the snare, bass drum, and cymbals – and get hands-on experience learning basic drumming patterns and stick techniques. By practicing basic drumming techniques and playing simple rhythms, students will develop coordination and timing, fostering a rhythmic intuition essential to any music genre.

Weeks 8 & 9: Ukulele

In Weeks 9 and 10, students explore the ukulele. This compact, stringed instrument, renowned for its delightful tone and accessibility, serves as a perfect introduction to stringed instruments. Students will become familiar with its parts, like the fretboard and tuning pegs, while learning about sound production and simple chord formation. In Weeks 15 and 16, students are introduced to a staple of orchestras and jazz bands – the clarinet. What is the Cosmo School of Music's Music Discovery Program?

The Music Discovery Program is an immersive 20-week program designed for children aged 6 to 9 years. This unique program offers a comprehensive, hands-on introduction to ten diverse musical instruments: Piano, Voice, Hand Percussion, Drums, Ukulele, Guitar, Violin, Clarinet, Flute, and Trumpet.

What is the structure of the program?

The program is composed of 20 one-hour classes, held once a week. Each two-week block focuses on a different instrument. Who will be teaching the classes?

Our talented multi-instrumentalist instructors, all of whom have undergone vulnerable sector checks, lead the classes. These instructors bring a wealth of expertise and a passion for music, ensuring a dynamic and engaging learning environment for all students.

What is the goal of the program?

The Music Discovery Program aims to provide children and their families with an extensive, interactive exploration of different musical instruments. By the end of the program, students will have a foundational understanding of each instrument and a clear idea of which instruments they might wish to study further.

Unlike many other programs, our Music Discovery Program provides a comprehensive introduction to a broad range of instruments, allowing students and their families to make an informed decision about further musical pursuits based on personal experience. The program is structured to be fun, engaging, and educational, fostering a love for music from an early age.

What should I bring to each class?

We supply all the materials and instruments necessary for the class, so your child doesn't need to bring anything special. We do recommend bringing a water bottle.

What is the cost of the program?

The cost of the 20-week program is $730 paid in full; or monthly installments of $146 per month for 5 months.
